City of Parramatta is focused on helping businesses become more efficient through innovative programs that achieve sustainable outcomes and increased profitability.
We partner with local businesses on activities such as organising tree planting, clean-up events and also organise regular forums to educate the local community on ways to reduce energy usage and explore solar installations.
As a part of the Smart City Master plan, City of Parramatta aims to improve liveability, enhance sustainability and achieve economic prosperity. We aim to offer new sustainability programs for local businesses such as the Business to Business (B2B) resource exchange to develop business clusters and facilitate conversations on sustainability.
Parra$mart Business program
Free sustainability assessments are offered to local businesses in Rydalmere and Silverwater to improve efficiencies across energy, water and waste. The sustainability assessment includes:
- analysis of business energy and water usage and waste to landfill
- opportunities for improvements
- an action plan for implementation.
City of Parramatta also provides financial rebates to help participating businesses implement the highest priority recommendations. Sustainability assessments are limited in number and are on a first-come basis.

Plate back to Paddock Food recycling program
Our trial food recycling program offers food service businesses the option to cut their waste bill and improve waste management practices. We provide free bins, bin liners, signage, collection and recycling during the trial. To be eligible for the program, your food business needs to have its own waste management arrangement (not shared) that is located within the Parramatta CBD and willing to separate all food waste from general waste.
This trial is funded by City of Parramatta as part of NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA)'s Waste Less and Recycling More initiative.
For more information on how you can get involved, contact City of Parramatta's Waste Education Officer on 02 9806 8295.
Water efficiency in Parramatta
Sydney Water and councils are teaming up to tackle the drought, with a new partnership to achieve water savings across Sydney.
Five local councils have partnered with Sydney Water to deliver a water efficiency program targeting water savings in businesses and residential strata. The councils involved include Blacktown, Campbelltown, City of Parramatta, City of Sydney and Northern Beaches.
Councils and Sydney Water are co-funding the employment of project officers that will work with businesses and residential strata buildings within each council area to identify and implement measures to help save water.
Executive Drought Lead at Sydney Water Catherine Port says there’s the opportunity to make significant savings.
“We hope to generate a sustained reduction in water demand through water efficiency. Our goal is to bring on board 250 businesses who will work towards saving a combined 750,000 litres per day,” said Mrs Port.
“This will mean a target of 275 million litres of water a year across the five council areas.”
City of Parramatta Council will work with Sydney Water to target Parramatta’s top 50 water-using businesses and large residential strata apartments.
“Change starts with us. This fantastic partnership is a great opportunity for Council to work towards our goal of creating an environmentally sustainable City and protect our water supply for future generations,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said.
Level 1 water restrictions remain in place across Greater Sydney and the Illawarra.
Businesses who rely upon outdoor water use are urged to apply for exemptions by calling 132092.
