Parramatta powered by renewable energy
City of Parramatta Council’s electricity supply is powered by 100 per cent renewable energy following a landmark deal with ZEN Energy, delivered in partnership with Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC).
Worth approximately $180 million, the renewable energy supply agreement begins in July 2022 and runs to 2026 with an option to extend to 2030. It will deliver more than 214 gigawatt hours of electricity per year to 25 council areas across NSW.
The renewable energy will be sourced from large solar farms at Moree, Hillston and Nevertire in NSW, and will power council facilities and streetlights.
The renewable energy supply agreement is a key component in achieving the City of Parramatta’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 60 percent by 2038 (based on 2015 levels).
A Carbon Neutral City
The City of Parramatta has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2022 and will be obtaining Carbon Neutral certification for the 2022/23 financial year under the Climate Active Standard by reducing and offsetting carbon emissions to reach net zero.
Council is reducing emissions through a range of initiatives including:
- Our renewable energy supply agreement (see above) starting July 2022
- Implementing the largest smart and LED energy efficiency streetlighting upgrade project ever seen in NSW
- Ongoing energy efficiency upgrades of Council-owned buildings and park assets
- The installation of 371kW of roof top solar panels on various Council facilities such as libraries, community centres and car parks including the Justice Precinct Car Park.
- Installing electric vehicle (EV) charging points in two Council carparks and Rydalmere Operations Centre
- Transitioning all Council vehicles to low emissions.
